A term coined by Dr. Mbilishaka. Upon earning her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Anthropology and Community and Global Health with Honors. In May of 2023, The Anthropology Department Faculty from Macalester College selected Wilda Aisyah Batin as this year’s recipient of the Jack Weatherford Prize for Best Capstone. This award is given to the senior anthropology major who have produce the best capstone paper, as judged by a panel of faculty in the Department of Anthropology. It is named in honor of Professor Jack Weatherford, who designed the Senior Seminar course which includes the independent research by each student culminating in a synthesizing capstone research paper.
In her capstone, “Trust Your Braider: Connecting, Healing, and Protecting The Roots of Our Community,” Batin brilliantly weaves theory and setting to highlight how black hair stylists and black hair salons serve as sanctuaries and centers of healing for black women, many of whom do not have access to (or faith in) traditional forms of mental health services.
Wilda offers hair healing to those who seek it. This includes Ayurvedic head oil massages, neck massages, head scrubs, and more. Hair is a sacred place. In Chinese culture, hair is the in-between of life and death.
